Only eight states have more drunk driving arrests than Wisconsin. Long known for its drinking culture, the state is well above the national average with more than 400 arrests-per-100-thousand residents. The study by Safe-Home-dot-org used data from the FBI and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration based on 2017 numbers. South Dakota was at the top of the list with a rate more than twice as high as Wisconsin’s. Drunk driving arrests have decreased by more than 44 percent over the last decade, but nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities involve a drunk driver.
