Monroe Moving Ahead to Build New School Building

The School District of Monroe will move forward with a plan to build a new high school on farmland on the city’s east side following a vote Monday night. By a 1,064-660 vote, district residents approved the district’s plan to move the high school campus to a larger site. District leaders have said it will more affordable to build a new school on the roughly 77-acre property on 31st Avenue near Northside Elementary School than at the current high school site on 26th Street on the south end of town. Monday’s vote is the latest step in the district’s push to build a new high school following a successful $88 million referendum in November. That referendum, though, left numerous voters feeling misled when they received their tax bills.
