On Monday, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a fatal crash at the south intersection of County Highway A at County Highway D. 86 year old Eugene Schriefer of rural Dodgeville, was eastbound on County Highway A west of County Highway D in his vehicle. Schriefer did not slow for the “T” intersection and crashed into the embankment on the east side of the road. The SUV traveled several hundred feet into the cornfield before it came to rest. There were two passengers in the SUV at the time of the crash, 84 year old Lorraine Schriefer of Dodgeville and 76 year old Donna Toay of Mineral Point. Possible minor injuries were reported for both passengers. Platteville Fire and Southwest Health EMS removed Eugene Schriefer from the SUV. He was taken to Southwest Health Center via ambulance. The following day Eugene Schriefer passed away. It is still being investigated as to the actual cause of death, as there may have been a medical issue with Schriefer just prior to the crash. All three occupants of the SUV were wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Platteville Fire, Southwest Health EMS, and Bill’s Body Shop of Fennimore.
