A father and son charged with poisoning and killing a Dodgeville woman stood for trial Tuesday. It’s the first day of what’s scheduled to be the seven-day trial for father Aric Way and son Philip Schmidt-Way. The victim was their mother and grandmother, respectively. Both are charged for first-degree intentional homicide as party to a crime. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) reports carbon monoxide poisoning was a “contributing factor” in the woman’s death. A criminal complaint reports the victim had recently agreed to sell the family farm, which Schmidt-Way would have inherited upon her death.
